Yesterday at the foster clinic there was a woman with a litter of tiny, tiny kittens, one of whom was a beautiful orange and white creamsicle. I told her, “I love orange boy cats, they are all so stupid.” and the foster mom said to me, with tears of love in her eyes, face glowing with maternal pride, “He is only 6 days old and I can already tell that he’s going to be so stupid!”

My family needs help desperately. My grandfather was a 77 year old veteran who knew how to make people smile and laugh, even if he wasn’t feeling good himself. He brought laughter and joy to every room he went, and found a way to make friends out of enemies.
He passed unexpectedly yesterday by auto accident. The other driver, a young female, crossed over at least two lanes and a median and hit my grandfather head on. He died on impact.
He did not have life insurance and my grandmother does not make much money as it is. We’ve set up a gofundme page to help with expenses she may need covered in the next few months.

Trainability in cats is a funny thing.
My cats understand and will obey a number of verbal commands, one of which is “go away”. I don’t use it often, but if they’re bugging me and I’m trying to work or doing something that could be dangerous for cats, I can tell them to go away, and off they go - they’ll only keep pestering me if there’s a serious problem they need me to look at.
That said, their idea of a serious problem that requires my attention is somewhat eccentric. Previous instances have included:
- There was an unfamiliar car parked across the street
- Their water bowl was four inches to the left of its usual position

One of them had puked on the stairs and they didn’t want to walk past it
- It was raining
- One of them saw a weird bug
These are all very important things that required your attention. They’re doing a good job.
Dogs really aren’t much better. I teach all my dogs the command “show me”. How it works is if the dog needs something but I’m having trouble understanding what exactly they’re trying to tell me, I say “show me” and they lead me to whatever the problem is. Usually they lead me to a real problem (like a toy that got stuck under the couch, their water bowl is empty, etc). But sometimes they want me to fix things like this-
- They pulled the covers off my bed and now they want me to put the covers back
- They put their ball on top of the ottoman but the ottoman won’t throw it for them
- The cat is sleeping and won’t chase them
- A flower fell off the potted plant
- The cat is sitting in a box and they don’t like it
- One of them lost their bandana
- The cat won’t take the toy they’re trying to give her
- The cat DID take the toy they gave her and now they want it back

One of my favorite thing I’ve learned about animals studies is that you should avoid using colorful leg bands when you’re banding birds because you can accidentally completely skew the data because female birds prefer males with colorful bands
Apparently if you put a red band on a male red wing blackbird his harem size can double
So like you can completely frick up the natural reproduction of a group of birds by giving a guy a bracelet so stylish that females CANNOT resist him
This is probably one of my favorite science anecdotes! This is why it’s so important to get outside the human umvelt and consider everything from the perspective of the animals you’re working with..,
TBH if my choices were a naked guy or a nearly identical naked guy with a rad bracelet, I’d pick the bracelet guy too.
its weird to think horses were ever ‘prey animals’ because what fucking predator looks at a 8 foot tall ENORMOUS beast with pitch black devils eyes, terrifying teeth and extremely powerful legs and think ‘yeah lets go attack that one’
